The conference in Leeds became Klaus Stratemann’s last Ellington Study Group Conference. By then he had attended almost all of them and it was very very emotional in Leeds when he for the last time gave an “Ellington on Film” presentation to an appreciative audience of Ellington aficionados.
The exact title of the presentation was Ellington and the Advertising Media.
The first film Stratemann talks about and plays is Playback- Duke Ellington. He also writes about it Day By Day and Film By Film. “Playback was the title of a series of advertising films produced for the promotion of Columbia records over the CBS television network. All films featured Goddard Lieberson, President of the CBS Records Division since 1956.
The Playback-Duke Ellington was filmed and recorded at Radio Recorders in Los Angeles June 26, 1960 and the full film is about 5 minutes long.
Next film in Strateman’s presentation is Astrofreight aka Cargo By Air, American Airlines Travelogue and Suite For Swinging. It is about 14 minutes long and the sondtrack was issued on the Extreme Rarities ER-1008 LP.
He includes the Craven Filter commerial in his presentatation. It is filmed for Craven Cigarette C0. in February 8, 1970 and shows “the flight to and arrival at Sidney Airport and some scenes from a recording. It is actually a very nice video.
Stratemann ends his presentation with just a few words about the Hammond Organ Chat and even fewer words from Ellington in this commercial for “Hammond organ newest product, the Sounder R 1 5400 K”. On page 659 in Day By Day And Film By Film there is a rather full annotation.
