Ellington started his 1970 concert tour in France on July 29 with a concert in Lille in the north of France with a concert of sacred music. After a one day detour to Luxemburg, he settled for a couple of days in Paris. July 1 was a slow day with preparations for the recording of  Ellington sitting down at the piano in the ORTF studio in the center of Paris tnext day and the recording of a TV program called Bienvenue Chez Guy Beart on July 4.
