After the short opening of the Ellington ’86, it was time for presentations. Martin Williams was scheduled to be the first speaker but his train from Washington DC was late so Mark Tucker had to start with his presentation God’s Trombones.
During almost one hour he talked about three of Ellington’s trombonists – Lawrence Brown, Juan Tizol and Tricky Sam Nanton. Tucker gave the audience a presentation in his usual style with perspectives and details. He gave examples of the style of each trombonist but also how Ellington found a “collective role” for them in many of his compositions.
