According to TDWAW, the 11th October, was a day off. But there are other information what he did on this day. In an article in the DEMS Bulletin, Klaus Göttinger seems to think that one of the two concerts filmed for television during the Indian tour are from Bombay and it could only be an extra concert there on 11th October. This can fit with Simon’s mission report for tour, in which he says there were three performances in Bombay. One of them was the concert(s) on 10th October and the one on 12th October since it starts with Ellington talking for about 10 or 20 minutes about jazz and its muscians to university students at 6:30 pm. It was followed by the main concert.
Both event took place at Shri Shamukhananda Sabha, Fine Arts and Cultural Center.
The main concert was more than one hour long, so we publish it in two parts. Regrettably, the sound quality is not that that great but we consider it OK for listening.
The concert starts with (or follows the student presentation) with Paul Gonsalves, Duke Ellington and Ernie Shephard playing In A Sentimental Mood and then the full orchestra plays In A Mellow Tone, Jeep’s Blues, Harmony In Harlem, Tea For Two and Honeysuckle Rose.
The soloists are:
Paul Gonsalves and Duke in In A Sentimental Mood
Cat Anderson and JohnnyHodges in In A Mellow Tone
Johnny Hodges in Jeep’s Blues and Harmony In Harlem
Rolf Ericson in Tea For Two
Jimmy Hamilton in Honeysuckle Rose
Enjoy!
