Dan Morgenstern, who at that time was still the Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University in Newark, appeared in afternoon session of the first day of Ellington ’86 with his talk. I enjoyed it immensely when I was editing the video and I hope that the readers will do it as well.

Morgenstern has an enormous knowledge of jazz and he used it to give a detailed portrait of the many dimensions of Arthur Whetsel with many musical examples. Among them Black Beauty, Saturday Night Function, Misty Morning, Dicty Glide, Save This Stomp, That Rhythm Man, Sweet Dreams of Love, Drop Me Off at Harlem and Reminiscing In Tempo.

There is an article about Whetsel in DESS Bulletin 2016-4. The issue is available at the website and here is the link https://ellingtongalaxy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Bulle-16-4.pdf and the cover.
